South County Hospital Hosts New Mended Hearts® Chapter to Help Those with Heart Disease
South County Hospital is pleased to announce that it is now hosting an official Mended Hearts chapter, one of only three in the state.
Mended Hearts is a national nonprofit organization affiliated with the American Heart Association, with a mission to "inspire hope in heart disease patients and their families." Founded more than 50 years ago, Mended Hearts has been recognized for its role in facilitating a positive patient-care experience within more than 450 hospitals and rehabilitation clinics across the country. In addition, local chapters provide services to heart patients through a variety of programs including support-group meetings and educational forums.
Mended Hearts chapters help people understand that there can be a rich, rewarding life after heart disease. Members listen, share their experiences, learn from healthcare professionals and volunteer to talk to other heart patients about what they may face including lifestyle changes, depression, recovery, and treatment. Annually, Mended Hearts volunteers make 227,000 hospital visits to patients and 30,000 visits to family members and caregivers. Learn more at mendedhearts.org.
Jim Taricani, the award-winning journalist and heart-transplant recipient, will serve as president of the new chapter hosted by South County Hospital. The first meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 30, at 6:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Potter Conference Center. There is no charge to attend and anyone with heart disease as well as family members are welcome to attend.
